SSJ-TOSF Join Campaign to Spread Awareness About Human Trafficking
The Sisters of St. Joseph of the Third Order of St. Francis have partnered with five other congregations of sisters – Servants of Mary, Sisters of the Sorrowful Mother, Sisters of St. Francis of the Holy Cross, School Sisters of St. Francis, and the Holy Cross Sisters in Merrill, WI – to spread the word that human trafficking happens everywhere.
Throughout the next year, a double-sided brochure (below) is being placed in tourism racks throughout the service area of 5 Star Marketing and Distribution, Tomahawk, WI. The brochures tell travelers how to recognize and report trafficking.
According to the Department of Homeland Security, millions of men, women, and children are trafficked in countries around the world, including the United States, every year. It is estimated that human trafficking generates many billions of dollars of profit per year, second only to drug trafficking as the most profitable form of transnational crime.
Part of what makes fighting human trafficking so challenging is that it is a "hidden crime." This means victims rarely come forward to seek help because of language barriers, fear of the traffickers, and/or fear of law enforcement. By knowing the signs of human trafficking and how to report suspicious activity, you, too, could help save a life.
