Widening Circles

For the first time, one of the local communities in the Chicago area is gathering under the leadership of associate Laura Wells. This is a departure from the usual leadership of a sister for the local community. It is a group that continues to share the charism of the congregation while gathering as a non-canonical community.

Five years ago, the SSJ-TOSF General Chapter articulated the congregation's deepest desires:

  • BUILD life-giving, trusting communities that cherish each one's personal gifts,
  • EMPOWER one another to live the truth of Gospel values,
  • BOND with others in ever widening circles of compassion and peace,
  • SPEAK to the Church and to the world from our common understanding that there be no outcasts in our experience of life on this earth.

Inspired by the spirit of these deepest desires, the local community now includes Sisters Cecilia Zielen, Dorothy Monikowski, Judith David and Marcella Nowakowski, associates Reneta and Bob Webb and Laura and Charles Wells, and companion Sharon McElmeel. The diversity of vowed, married and single, as well as men and women, Catholic and Episcopal, makes for enriched prayer and stimulating conversation.

The local community meets in the same manner as all other SSJ-TOSF local communities, challenging each other to "live the truth of Gospel values."
